How to Stay Safe in the Age of AI: community forum helps Central Oregonians protect themselves online

(Update: Adding video)

SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ)-- A few weeks ago, a local senior who had saved $150,000 for a down payment on a new home was the victim of a devastating email scam. He believed he was transferring the money to his Bend-based mortgage agency, he instead clicked a hacked link created by scammers, losing every dime. This tragedy not only ended his dream of homeownership but left him unable to purchase a home for the rest of his life.

Scams like these are becoming increasingly common both locally and globally. Experts warn that Americans could soon lose up to $40 billion annually to such fraud, with an average loss estimated at $83,000 per victim.

To help protect Central Oregon residents, We Co-Create AI, a Bend-based creative agency, is hosting a special event titled How to Stay Safe in the Age of AI. This forum is designed specifically for area residents aged 50 and older to offer clarity on the evolving topic of artificial intelligence and its implications.

The event will take place Tuesday, November 12th, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at The Belfry, located at 302 E Main Avenue in Sisters. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch for a relaxed and conversational session moderated by We Co-Create AI.

Participants will learn what AI is, how it is currently used, and how it affects everyday life. More importantly, the session will provide practical tools to recognize AI-generated misinformation and protect against online fraud.

“No technical background is necessary—just curiosity,” said Tana Ver Bouwens, Director of Outreach at We Co-Create AI. “We’ll explore the real-world impacts of AI and help people feel more confident navigating what they see and hear online.”

Tickets are $18 when purchased in advance and $20 at the door. Registration is available online
