Recreational advisory lifted for Upper Klamath Lake; Pet warning remains
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Oregon Health Authority has lifted the recreational use health advisory for Upper Klamath Lake in Klamath County.
The advisory had been in place since late July due to elevated cyanotoxin levels. Water monitoring now shows toxin levels are below recreational guidelines for people, meaning it’s safe again for activities like boating and swimming.
However, officials say levels remain above educational guideline values for dogs. Pet owners are urged to keep their animals away from the water, as exposure to harmful algae can cause serious illness or death.
OHA advises the public to remain on alert for signs of harmful algal blooms, which can develop or disappear quickly. Water that appears foamy, scummy, or pea-green should be avoided.
More information on cyanobacteria and safety guidelines is available on OHA’s Harmful Algae Blooms website.
