OSU-Cascades to host MLK Day peace breakfast in Bend
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Oregon State University–Cascades will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with its annual Peace Breakfast on Jan. 19, featuring a keynote address by Lakayana Yotoma Drury, vice chair of the Oregon Commission on Black Affairs.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium of Edward J. Ray Hall on the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend. The breakfast is free to attend, but participants must register in advance.
The Peace Breakfast is a long-standing OSU tradition designed to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy while inspiring continued progress toward justice and equality. Organizers say the event brings together students, faculty, staff and community members to reflect on civil rights, service and inclusion.
Drury is a former elementary and high school teacher and the founder and executive director of Word is Bond, a nonprofit that empowers young Black men through leadership and mentorship. He has served on the Local Public Safety Coordinating Committee and on a coalition that advised Portland Public Schools’ Center for Black Student Excellence.
His work has earned statewide recognition: Drury received the Community Leader of the Year award at the 38th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute hosted by the World Arts Foundation in 2024 and was named to the Portland Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 list in 2021, as well as its Executives of the Year list in 2022.
