WASHINGTON (KTVZ)--The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public input on proposed updates to manage 2.5 million acres of timberlands in western Oregon. The initiative aims to expand domestic timber production and reduce the nation's reliance on foreign imports.

A notice opening the public comment period will be published in the Federal Register on February 19th. Federal officials stated the management updates are intended to revive local economies and manage wildfire risks through enhanced resource production.

Revenue generated from timber harvested on these lands is shared between the U.S. Treasury and 18 western Oregon counties. These funds are used to pay for essential local services, including schools, libraries, public safety and infrastructure projects. According to the Bureau of Land Management, timber sales in the region currently support nearly 2,000 local jobs and generate more than $1 billion for local economies annually.

The management of these 2.5 million acres is governed by the Oregon and California Revested Lands Sustained Yield Management Act of 1937. This federal law requires sustainable forestry practices designed to support the livelihoods of local communities. The proposed updates are intended to ensure a secure and resilient domestic timber supply.

Acting BLM Director Bill Groffy emphasized the connection between timber harvesting and community safety. "Bringing timber production back to historic levels is essential for reviving local economies and reducing the threat of catastrophic wildfires," Groffy said. "President Trump has made it clear — enhanced domestic timber production is vital for our national security, economic prosperity and effective wildfire management."

The public can review more information and submit feedback through the BLM National NEPA Register. Comments may be submitted online using the "Participate Now" feature or sent via email to BLM_OR_Revision_Scoping@blm.gov. Written comments may also be delivered to the BLM office at 1220 SW 3rd Ave. in Portland.

The public comment period will remain open until March 23rd. All formal feedback must be submitted or delivered by that date to be included in the resource management update process.
