Snow Report: The Big “Spring Flip” is Here

If you stepped outside today, you felt the last gasp of winter. Between the 47 mph gusts at Mt. Bachelor’s Pine Marten station and the lingering flurries on the passes, it was a rugged Saturday. But as we head into tonight, the National Weather Service is tracking a massive shift. We are officially entering a "Spring Flip" as a high-pressure ridge builds over the PNW.

After a chilly Saturday, the National Weather Service Pendleton office expects Sunday to jump into the mid-50s, with a serious warm-up hitting the upper 60s to low 70s by Monday and Tuesday.

Snowpack & Safety Check-
While the sun is coming out, the NRCS SNOTEL data reminds us that our snowpack is still sitting lean—between 24% and 33% of normal for mid-March. If you’re heading into the backcountry to enjoy the warmth, take note: the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) still has the danger level at Considerable. Today’s winds created touchy slabs on steep slopes that won't just disappear overnight.

Pro-Tip for Sunday:
With the sun hitting that fresh snow, the UV reflection is going to be intense. Since snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, you’re basically in a giant tanning mirror. Lather up the sunscreen, even if it feels breezy.

Also, keep an eye on lower-elevation trails—the NOAA hydrology experts expect rapid snowmelt this week, so things are about to get muddy fast.
