Pay It Forward: Supporting Madras families through early childhood care

MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Oregon Child Development Coalition in Madras is being recognized this month through a “Pay It Forward” program that highlights organizations making a difference in their communities.

The coalition—known as OCDC—provides free childcare services for farmworker families, focusing on children from infancy through pre-kindergarten. Staff say their work centers on early childhood development, using play-based learning and consistent routines to help young children grow and feel secure.

Program Director Madeleine Calderon says the connection between staff and students is a key part of that success.

“Kids love being here. They have a special connection with all the teachers and staff,” Calderon said. “They come into the classroom and tell us stories about going camping over the weekend, or maybe they went fishing.”

Because many of the children are very young, teachers emphasize building trust and creating a stable environment where kids can learn through everyday experiences.

As part of the recognition, the program received a $500 donation. Leaders say the funds could go toward new furniture, classroom supplies, or toys to support learning and play.

The Oregon Child Development Coalition serves families across the region, offering a critical resource for working parents while helping children build a strong foundation before entering school.
