Prineville Police warn residents to avoid suspicious substances outdoors

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- As warmer weather draws more people outdoors, Prineville community safety officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious substances or items found in parks, trails, and neighborhoods.

The Prineville Police Department says handling unknown substances can pose serious health risks, emphasizing the importance of keeping children and pets away from such discoveries.

The department posted the following to it's Facebook page Monday morning:

"With warmer weather here, more people are out enjoying our parks, trails, and neighborhoods.

If you come across suspicious substances, drug paraphernalia, or unknown items while out walking, please do not touch or pick them up.

Some substances can be dangerous if handled and may pose serious health risks to both adults and children.

If you find something concerning:

-Leave the item where it is

-Contact dispatch to report the item and location at (541) 447-4168 and press 1

-Keep children and pets away from the area

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe while everyone enjoys the outdoors this summer."
