THERE'S GOOD NEWS: Young volunteers learn rescue techniques and wildfire safety in Burns

BURNS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Young people in Burns are getting hands-on experience helping protect their community from wildfires.

On August 11th and 12th, the Burns Fire Department partnered with the High Desert Partnership Youth Internship program on wildland fuel mitigation projects.

The students also got a look at another side of emergency response. After completing their work, a group participated in a vehicle extrication class, learning basic rescue techniques while wearing proper protective equipment.

Fire officials say they're proud of the students' hard work and interest in serving their community.

They also thanked the youth participants and High Desert partnership for making the program a success.
