Bend Police ID woman struck, critically injured by pizza delivery driver
(Update: Police release name of woman; still in critical condition)
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A 20-year-old Bend woman was critically injured and a second pedestrian also was hurt Wednesday night when they were struck by a Pizza Hut driver leaving the restaurant on a delivery, police said Thursday.
Officers responded around 8:30 p.m. to the reported vehicle-pedestrian crash at 740 Northeast Third Street, Sgt. Joe Pacheco said.
They arrived to find a woman, identified later Thursday as Jessica Edwards, trapped beneath a Toyota Camry, Pacheco said.
Officers removed Edwards from beneath the car and Bend Fire medics took her to St. Charles Bend with life-threatening injuries. Pacheco said she was in critical condition early Thursday.
A 40-year-old Bend man also was struck by the car and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Pacheco said. He also helped police extricate the woman from beneath the car.
The Toyota's driver, a 26-year-old Bend man, is cooperating with the investigation, the sergeant said. Lt. Juli McConkey confirmed Thursday that the driver was departing on a delivery from the restaurant at the time of the crash.
McConkey said Edwards remained in critical condition Thursday evening. She said the crash remains under investigation, and no citations have been issued.
The Bend Pizza Hut manager, Joyce (who declined to give her last name), told NewsChannel 21, "On a personal note, my heart goes out to the victim and the driver, and Godspeed for her recovery." She referred any other questions to the company's media representatives.
Bend Police traffic reconstruction officers and evidence technicians processed the scene for several hours.
Impaired driving does not appear to be a factor in the crash, Pacheco said. He added that the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as available.
