Duck race raises millions for local nonprofits in Central Oregon

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Vibrant rubber ducks filled the Deschutes River on Sunday for the 37th Great Drake Park Duck Race in Central Oregon. Because regional credit unions covered all event expenses, every dollar from ticket sales was donated directly to four local organizations.

The proceeds from this year's race were distributed among Friends of the Children, Kids Center, Saving Grace and Family Kitchen.

Michelle Solley, a representative for the Bend Rotary Club, noted the event's historic impact on the region. “This is our 37th year. It's organized by the three Bend Rotary Clubs and we have raised more than $2 million,” Solley said.

One of the beneficiary organizations, Friends of the Children Central Oregon, currently provides support to approximately 100 youth throughout the region.

Chloe Manke, a representative for Friends of the Children Central Oregon, detailed how the organization supports local youth through long-term guidance. “We pair children who have faced a tremendous amount of adversity, who are four and 5 years old, with a full-time, salaried mentor for 12-and-a-half years — so, all the way through high school graduation,” Manke said.

Friends of the Children Central Oregon is scheduled to host its annual Abundance Dinner and Auction this Thursday. The event will feature family-style dinners prepared using produce cultivated directly by the children.
