‘Changed my life forever’: Silver Rail educational assistant inside classroom during shooting releases statement

Bend-La Pine Schools

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend-La Pine Schools released a statement Sunday from Miah Hergert, an inclusion educational assistant at Silver Rail Elementary School who was inside the classroom during the October 15th shooting.

In her message, Hergert expressed grief, thanked rescuers, and offered support to the school community.

Hergert was with students when the violence occurred at the Bend school last month. The district shared her statement as community members continue coping with the loss.

Hergert reflected on the rapid events of that day and the emotional impact of the crisis.

“Oct. 15 changed my life forever,” Hergert said. “Everything happened so fast, I witnessed both unimaginable darkness and extraordinary love.”

She expressed appreciation to rescuers and shared condolences with grieving families.

“To the angels who saved my life, thank you,” Hergert said. “I will carry you in my heart forever. My heart aches for the families who lost their loved ones.”

Hergert moved to Bend less than a year ago to work with local students. She noted that her work brought back memories of her own childhood.

“I came here hoping to make a difference in their lives, never realizing how much they would change mine,” Hergert said. “These children are our light and I hope to continue growing alongside them.”

She praised local educators and residents for supporting her following the shooting.

“To the Bend community, the families, teachers and children who have become such a special part of my life, my heart is forever with you,” Hergert said. “There is still so much love in this world and I believe that together, we can find our way forward.”
