BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- After much consideration, the Latino Community Association has canceled its annual Gala de Oro this year out of concern for the safety of its donors and supporters.

LCA had postponed the event, originally scheduled at the Riverhouse in Bend on April 4 to July 25, but decided in late April to cancel the event all together.

Executive Director Brad Porterfield cited COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the economic hardship impacting so many families, and the uncertainty the crisis is causing as key reasons.

"A successful gala fundraiser is highly unlikely this year," he said. "We need to put health first and find other ways to raise the funds to support our services and advocacy efforts."

This year is LCA's 20th anniversary of helping Latino families thrive in Central Oregon. Currently, the organization is focused on raising funds to provide financial assistance to immigrant families to cover housing and other basic needs during the COVID-19 crisis.
