Bend police warn of fake ‘captain’ scam calls

Spoof Bend PD number, claim unpaid fines or arrest warrant

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend police said Friday several community members have reported getting phone calls from a supposed police department “captain" and a spoofed number, demanding payment for unpaid court fines or informing them they have a warrant for their arrest. 

"The caller ID displays a number associated with our office," Corporal Kyle Voll said. "The suspect male caller is described as having a Southern accent."

Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. (More info: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id)

Voll reminded, "No governmental agency will call you and demand payment for fines over the phone. They also will never ask for payment via gift cards, iTunes cards, Green Dot cards, etc."

Law enforcement reminds you to never give out you personal information or financial details to companies you do not initiate contact with.
