Author Inspires Sunriver Charity Walk

The popular new book “The Daughter’s Walk” by author Jane Kirkpatrick was featured in a very special three-day event this weekend.

Kirkpatrick visited the Sunriver community starting Saturday for a three-day series of events tied to her latest release.

The historical novel follows Clara Estby and her mother, Helga on their walk from Spokane, Washington to New York in 1896 in pursuit of $10,000 in prize money that could save the family farm.

Sunday morning, Kirkpatrick lead a 5K walk benefiting the Newberry Habitat For Humanity.

Dozens of residents came out with their dogs to complete the three-mile walk that looped around the the Sunriver Books & Music Store, the Sunriver Lodge and across the meadow.

Habitat For Humanity members were thrilled at the turnout.

“This community of Sunriver is a very special community,” said Newberry Habitat Director Randy Heise. “There are several non-profits that benefit from community involvement here.”

“There was a weekend last year where there were three different, separate charity events, and the number of people you saw at every event were the same people, giving to the same causes. And it’s a very special community to work in.”

All the money raised from Sunday’s walk will go directly toward Newberry Habitat For Humanity to build houses for those in need.

Kirkpatrick will participate in a free book discussion and Q&A session Monday at 6:30 p.m., at Sunriver Books & Music.
