Jewel-Theft Ring Sounds Like Movie Script
“The detectives in Portland said that — that the story behind this is so interesting, that it could make a movie,” said Ron Henderson, part-owner of Saxon’s Fine Jewelry in Bend.
Five guys, three who met in prison, are accused of a string of heists in Nevada, California, Tennessee and Oregon, including right here in Bend. In May, court documents show, one of them walked out of Saxon’s with over $151,000 in diamonds.
“There are so many questions that are unanswered,” said Natasha Henderson, an employee at Saxon’s.
A 39 page federal court complaint reads like a script for the silver screen, and it has some of those answers.
Ernest Remor bought a pre-paid cell phone from Shopko 11 days before the heist. Then, it was presumably Jack Cannon who used it to set an appointment and have Saxon’s call him back.
As seen in the video from a robbery at a Portland jewelry store, the suspect grabs the diamonds and runs.
Court documents say the group used a “getaway car”, usually stolen just prior to the heist. Then dumped it, for a “wash vehicle”one that has no association with the theft. A “pin pointer” keeps an eye on the scene, communicating to the thief if they are clear to walk or if they need to run for the cars.
“We were worried that at some point in time that somebody might get hurt because they were pushed into a corner, or trapped, and had to fight their way out,? said Ron Henderson.
Nobody got hurt at Saxons. The diamonds were likely flown to Philadelphia and sold, authorities say.
The heists ended when police in Portland got a tip, but that was after an investigation by the Bend police.
Ron Henderson said, “When we were on the phone with the detectives, he said, ‘On a side note, I want you to know just how phenomenal the Bend Police Department and their detectives are. They definitely helped on this case.? .
Michael Young, Earnest Remor, Trey Adams, Victor Lupis and Jack Cannon currently face charges for transporting stolen property across state lines. Likely in the days to follow, new charges will be filed.
