Prineville Goes Back In Time, Capsules Opened

Back in February, when the Bowman Museum in Prineville was getting ready for construction on their expansion, they stumbled upon two time capsules with a wide array of historic goods tucked inside.

On Saturday, the museum revealed what was inside.

Hundreds packed inside the new expansion of the Bowman Museum Saturday afternoon, eagerly waiting to learn what was inside the time capsules.

Believed to be from 1956, organizers slowly and carefully pulled out the contents. Everything from newspaper clippings to Japanese money to cigars were shown off the the crowd who oooh and ahhed.

The contents were put in display cases for everyone to see. One of the favorites was the reading of a newspaper that said, “Steak, 49 cents a pound.”

“This looks like a picture, and this says Prineville Model Airplane Club — the ‘Globe Club, 1956.’ So somebody might recognize some of these people in these pictures,” Lucy Woodward, who found the capsules, read to the crowd.

Saturday was also a celebration of the completion of the first phase of the museum expansion.

The grand opening will be next year, when the newly designed exhibits are installed for all to see.
