Grizzly Road crash injures Prineville couple

A Prineville husband and wife were seriously injured Saturday night when he swerved to avoid a deer crossing Grizzly Road and their pickup truck rolled several times, throwing them to the ground, Crook County sheriff’s deputies said.

The driver, Darrell Dean Matthews, 34, was in fair condition Monday at St. Charles Medical Center-Bend and his wife, Catrina Belle Matthews, 29, was in serious condition, a spokeswoman said. One was flown to the hospital by a Life Flight helicopter and the other by AirLink, said sheriff’s Sgt. James Savage.

Sheriff’s deputies, Oregon State Police and Crook County Fire and Rescue medics responded to the reported rollover crash around 9:15 p.m. Saturday on Grizzly Road near Ryegrass Road, north of Prineville, Savage said.

An investigation determined Darrell Matthews had swerved to avoid a deer that crossed in front of him, Savage said. He lost control of his 1999 Ford F350 pickup, which rolled several times before coming to rest in a field.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Savage said. Seat belt usage has not yet been determined, deputies said.
