Rescuers transport injured Bend XC skier

A Bend woman was injured in a fall while cross-country skiing alone Monday afternoon, prompting a rescue effort, officials said.

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and Sheriff’s Search and Rescue were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to the report of an injured cross-country skier at Virginia Meissner Sno-Park, said Deputy Jim Whitcomb, assistant SAR coordinator.

Four SEAR members responded to the area with snowmobiles and located Rebeckah Berry, 34, at the Nordeen Shelter around 6:10 p.m., Whitcomb said.

Berry was skiing by herself when she fell about a quarter-mile south of the shelter, suffering non-life-threatening injuries, Whitcomb said. She was able to make it back to the shelter, where she waited for SAR members to arrive.

Berry was taken by snowmobile back to the Swampy Lakes Sno-Park parking lot, then taken by a SAR vehicle back to Meissner Sno-Park, where her car was parked.
