Prineville mother, son escape burning home

A Prineville mother and son fled their home unharmed after hearing smoke alarms and finding flames and black smoke in an upstairs bedroom Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Crook County Fire & Rescue responded around 1:30 p.m. to the reported fire at a two-story home on NW Teal Loop, said Fire Marshal Casey Kump.

Crews arrived in minutes and found the room and contents fire upstairs had filled the home with smoke, venting through an upstairs window, Kump said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, he said, but not before significant smoke and heat damage on the entire second floor.

Two of the home’s four occupants were home at the time, the woman and son, Kump said. They were downstairs and alerted to the blaze by smoke detectors.

The woman rushed upstairs to investigate and found the fire and large amounts of black smoke. Kump said she called 911 and the two left the home.

Losses are estimated at $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Kump said.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the two adults and two children displaced by the fire. The agency said it provided help with lodging, food, clothing, comfort kits and information about health and mental health services.
