Bend man critically hurt crossing Reed Mkt. Rd.

A 20-year-old Bend man was in critical condition Tuesday morning after being struck by a car while trying to cross SE Reed Market Road on foot, away from any marked crosswalk, police said.

Police responded at about 10:13 p.m. Monday to the reported crash on Reed Market Road east of Third Street, in front of the Stone Creek Apartments, officers said.

Sgt. Dan Ritchie said in a news release that a preliminary investigation found that Pedro Huerta was trying to cross the road from north to south in “an area that was poorly lighted and not designated for pedestrian crossing.”

Huerta was struck by a car headed west on Reed Market Road, and was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend.

The police sergeant said they believed he had sustained non-life-threatening injuries, but a hospital nursing supervisor said he was in critical condition Tuesday morning.

The driver of the car was unhurt, Ritchie said. He did not release the driver’s name but said, “It does not appear that alcohol or other intoxicants were contributing factors to the crash.”

No charges or arrest have been made in the crash, he said, but the investigation is continuing.

Ritchie added that Bend police want “to remind pedestrians to obey all traffic control devices and to yield the right of way to a vehicle upon a roadway when crossing at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”
