New Redmond brew pub adds to craft-beer scene

KTVZ

Near the heart of Redmond, a new family-run pub is bringing more craft beer to Central Oregon.

Smith Rock Brewing opened its doors just about three months ago, when four family members decided to make their passion their career.

“It’s something we discussed for quite a few years,” said Natalie Patterson, a co-owner and brewmaster of Smith Rock Brewing. “Danielle and I started brewing. Don had just been brewing off and on. We picked it up full-time — we were probably brewing four or five times a week.”

Starting off their business in a 2,600-square-foot space, the brewing capabilities are limited.

“Right now, we are just doing three kegs a week,” said Patterson.

But starting small has its positives.

“Being that we’re brewing on such a small scale, we can really experiment with stuff,” said Don Fredrickson, co-owner and brewer at Smith Rock Brewing.

So far, Smith Rock Brewing has released six beers, introducing them one at a time. They say although the focus is on the beer, the food is unique as well.

“Everything is local, fresh — we don’t have a freezer, so everything is made in-house,” said Smith Rock Brewing co-owner Danielle Stewart.

With a positive start to their new venture, the group of beer lovers says they hope to one day expand on their dream.

“We’d like to grow,” said Patterson. “It’s probably going to take us a little while though.”
