Caldera hosts ‘curated residency’
On Tuesday, Caldera welcomed five artists for a curated residency called East Meets West. Empowered by the Golden Spot Award from The Ford Family Foundation, Caldera has created this special two-week residency to bring together artists from the east and west sides of the state.
With a belief in an aesthetic influence of place, artists working near each other and interacting will be a conduit for exchange of knowledge and creative intuition. Five Oregon visual artists have been awarded residency throughEast Meets West which provides the gift of time and space at Caldera’s Arts Center near Sisters, Oregon along with generous cash award.
Midway through the residency, artists will work together with Caldera students on a progressive painting project. 7- 8 wood panels and canvases will be worked with paint, pencils, charcoal, and oil pastels.
Each person will work on a panel for a set amount of time and then move to the next surface. After each artist has touched each surface, other faster rotations will occur until a final touch session ends the project and each artist comes up with their own title for each piece. All of the titles will be written on the back with artists’ signatures. The pieces will later be display at Caldera events.

The Ford Family Foundation was established in 1957 by Kenneth W. and Hallie E. Ford. Its mission is “successful citizens and vital rural communities” in Oregon and Siskiyou County, California. The Foundation is located in Roseburg, Oregon, with a scholarship office in Eugene.
Established in 1996 by Dan Wieden, co-founder of the Portland, Oregon-based international ad agency Wieden+Kennedy, Caldera is a nonprofit arts organization that supports children with limited opportunities through long-term mentoring and arts learning, as well as provides fully subsidized residencies to professional artists. Caldera’s mission is to be a catalyst for transformation through innovative arts and environmental programs.
