Deputies: CRR boy accidentally shot by family member

A boy was accidentally shot in the abdomen, by a family member at a home on Crooked River Ranch Friday morning and later flown to a Bend hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Deschutes County sheriffs deputies said.

Deputies were called to a home at 8800 Thicket Lane around 10:40 a.m., on a report that the juvenile had been shot in the stomach, said sheriff’s Lt. Tim Leak.

Arriving deputies learned the boy had been taken from the scene by Crooked River Ranch Fire Department medics and flown to St. Charles-Bend for treatment, Leak said.

Leak said an investigation determined “this appeared to be an accidental gunshot by another family member.” He declined to reveal more specifics, other than to add, “There are no other persons of interest in the case.”

Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the incident, Leak said, and their findings will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for review.

An hour after the shooting, patrol cars and crime-scene tape blocked off the circular gravel driveway to the home.

Leak could not say much initially at the scene, other than that the shooting of the male juvenile was being investigated as an accident, so there were no suspects being sought or in custody, and no danger to the public.

“At this point, it appears to be an accidental gunshot wound, and we’re investigating it as such,” Leak said.
