Cyclist injured, cited in NE Bend collision

KTVZ

A bicyclist who ran into the side of a car leaving a northeast Bend parking lot was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon and was cited for riding against the flow of traffic, police said.

Officers responded shortly after 1 p.m. to what initially was reported as a pedestrian-vs.-car crash in the parking lot of Erickson’s Thriftway at NE Greenwood Avenue and Seventh Street, said Lt. Chris Carney.

An investigation found that Joaquin Flores-Hernandez, 27, was riding a bike toward the west in the eastbound bike lane, against the flow of traffic, Carney said, adding that he also was not wearing a helmet.

The driver, Arthur Hannon, 64, of Bend, was leaving the Erickson’s parking lot and said he did not see the bicyclist before pulling out , the lieutenant said.

Flores-Hernandez was taken to St. Charles-Bend with non-life-threatening injuries, Carney said, and cited for failure to drive on the right (ORS 811.295). Hospital officials said he was treated and released.

Several witnesses were interviewed at the crash scene, he added.
