La Pine man arrested in fatal Highway 31 crash
A La Pine man has been arrested on criminally negligent homicide and DUII charges in a fatal motorcycle-van crash Saturday evening on Highway 31 eight miles southeast of Highway 97 in Klamath County, Oregon State Police reported.
According to OSP Sgt. Sergeant Mike Turner, shortly before 7 p.m., a 2007 Honda motorcycle operated by Stephen Anthony Williams 57, of Silver Lake, was eastbound on Highway 31 near milepost 8 when it struck the passenger side of a 1984 Dodge van that was turning from the westbound lane into a private driveway.
Williams was flown by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles-Bend, where he died from his injuries, Turner said, adding that Williams was wearing a protective helmet.
The van’s driver, Glen Leland Harvey Jr., 43, of La Pine, was not injured, troopers said.
Harvey was arrested by OSP on charges of criminally negligent homicide and driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was lodged in the Klamath County Jail on those charges.
Troopers from the La Pine and Bend OSP offices are continuing the investigation. Senior Trooper Don Newcomb is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT and La Pine Rural Fire Protection District and EMS. The highway was closed about four hours during the emergency response and investigation.
