Driver cited in Sisters Hwy. 20W crash

Five people received minor injuries and a driver was cited on several charges in a two-car crash on Highway 20W in Sisters Saturday afternoon, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies reported.

Deputies and Sisters Fire medics were dispatched around 12:40 p.m. to the crash at Hwy. 20W and West Barclay Drive, said Sgt. Troy Gotchy.

Arriving deputies found a dark gray 2002 Toyota Sequoia had rolled onto its driver’s side in the middle of the eastbound lane, Gotchy said. A silver 2002 VW Beetle was parked in the middle of the road with severe front-end damage. Gotchy said all of the occupants of both cars were out before deputies and medics arrived.

The Toyota driver, Brent Wilson, 35, of Bend, and three of his four passengers, three of them children, were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released. The VW driver, David Elliott, 20, of Sisters, was uninsured, Gotchy said.

An investigation found that Elliott had tried to cross Hwy. 20 from Barclay Drive, the sergeant said. In doing so, he hit the rear driver’s-side tire of the Toyota, causing it to spin counter-clockwise and flip onto its side.

Elliott was cited on charges of failing to obey a traffic control device, according to Gotchy, who said he stopped at a stop sign but proceeded before traffic cleared. He’s also accused of driving with a suspended license and driving uninsured.

The highway was blocked for a brief period, he said, but eastbound traffic was diverted around the crash within a few minutes, while westbound traffic continued on its own.

Black Butte police and Oregon State Police assisted at the scene, Gotchy said.
