From just a ‘Chance’ to a lucky dog

After more than a month of care, Chance, Central Oregon’s famous pit bull mix, is well on his way to recovery.

Chance was severely injured after investigators said he fell out of a moving vehicle on Smith Rock Way in July.

Officials with BrightSide Animal Center said at the time that they didn’t know if he would survive.

Now, after several surgeries, he could be ready for adoption by November.

Shelter Executive Director Chris Bauersfeld said Saturday that Chance is cared for around the clock, going home with her each night.

She said several of his wounds have healed enough to remove some bandages.

“(There’s) a lot of interest in people who want to adopt,” Bauersfeld said. “We are not starting any adoption process until he’s closer to being able to go, and then our adoption team will take over at that point.”

Bauersfeld said the shelter has received thousands of dollars from people in Central Oregon and around the country who wanted to donate to Chance’s medical fund.

She said the shelter no longer needs any money for Chance, but still encourages people to donate to other shelter animals in Chance’s name.
