Teen arrested in OSU campus online threat

A 16-year-old Oregon teen was arrested Friday, accused of an online threat made Thursday on an Internet blog site, Oregon State Police reported.

OSP detectives, assisted by Corvallis police and the FBI, took the teen into custody on a first-degree disorderly conduct charge, after an investigation identified him as a “person of interest,” troopers said.

The boy’s name and hometown, and the content of the threat, “are not being released at this time because of the ongoing investigation,” OSP said in a news release. However, he was identified as “an Oregon resident who does not live in the Corvallis area.”

Before noon Thursday, OSP University Area Command at Oregon State University learned of the threat directed at the campus on an Internet blog site, troopers said. As a precautionary measure, a warning message and an emergency alert were sent to the OSU community and students, and law enforcement presence on campus was increased.

The initial investigation indicated the online threat originated outside of the Northwest, but investigative leads brought the focus back into Oregon, troopers said Friday, adding that “there is no known further potential threat.”

“OSP and OSU thank students, staff and campus visitors for their concern and commitment to campus safety,” the news release concluded.
