SMART named a top nonprofit to work for
SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) has again been named to Oregon Business Magazine’s list of 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon.
The rankings were revealed in September at an event in Portland, along with the October issue of the magazine, which spotlights the full list of winners.
More than 5,000 employees from 159 organizations throughout the state participated in the project. Based on the magazine’s widely regarded 100 Best Companies project, the nonprofit version was created to recognize a critical business sector that employs hundreds of thousands of workers.
This year, SMART ranked #22 among the list of medium-sized nonprofits; that was a jump from 2011 and 2012 when SMART ranked #29.
“We realize nonprofits view themselves as different from other businesses, but we also believe they have one thing in common: caring about their employees,” said Oregon Business Editor Linda Baker. “The nonprofits that made the 100 Best list have been successful in creating unique environments where their employees love to come to work.”
About SMART® (Start Making A Reader Today)
SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a statewide nonprofit organization that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We partner with schools around the state and engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK-3 rd grade children, helping strengthen literacy skills and encourage a love of reading.
Over the past two decades, SMART has steadily grown to become Oregon’s largest volunteer literacy program. In 2012-2013, we served more than 8,500 children statewide with the help of 5,000 community volunteers. In Central Oregon SMART serves nearly 600 children at 24 sites in Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson and Grant counties with the support of more than 350 volunteers. Children in the program receive 14 new books throughout the school year to keep and read with their families. Together, with support from communities and schools around the state, SMART is improving the reading capacity of Oregon’s children.
