SMART expanding, seeks volunteer readers

KTVZ

Are you ready to make a difference, give back or pay it forward in your community? SMART, Start Making A Reader Today is seeking volunteers for the 2013-2014 program year.

For 21 years, SMART has been pairing community volunteers with children who struggle to read in PreK- 3 rd grades here in Central Oregon.

We are opening five new school sites across Central Oregon this year and are in need of nearly 100 volunteers to join the 400 volunteers who have already committed to read with SMART in Central Oregon.

Just one hour a week is all it takes for you to make a difference in the life of a child.

We are also seeking volunteer Site Coordinators, a commitment that requires an average of 5 hours per week. We are looking for reading volunteers for our programs at:

Ponderosa Elementary
Pine Ridge Elementary
West Side Village Magnet School
Juniper Elementary
Bear Creek Elementary
La Pine Elementary
Rosland Elementary
Vern Patrick Elementary
Lynch Elementary
Crook County After-the-Bell
Cooked River Elementary
Ochoco Elementary

It would be impossible for SMART to provide critical reading support for Oregon’s children without our dedicated volunteers. To learn more about this fun and rewarding experience, please contact the local SMART office at 541-355-5600, or visit our website at www.getSMARToregon.org.

About SMART® (Start Making A Reader Today)

SMART, Start Making A Reader Today, is a statewide nonprofit organization that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We partner with schools around the state and engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK-3 rd grade children, helping strengthen literacy skills and encourage a love of reading. Over the past two decades, SMART has steadily grown to become Oregon’s largest volunteer literacy program. Children in the program receive 14 new books throughout the school year to keep and read with their families. Together, with support from communities and schools around the state, SMART is improving the reading capacity of Oregon’s children.
