DEQ sets Dec. 4 La Pine groundwater meeting

Oregon DEQ will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 4 to outline a path forward to address groundwater protection near La Pine. The meeting will be held at the La Pine High School Auditorium, 51633 Coach Road in La Pine.

The meeting will center on DEQ’s strategies for adopting recommendations provided by the South Deschutes/North Klamath Groundwater Protection Project Steering Committee. The committee provided the recommendations to DEQ in July.

The steering committee considered a number of ways to protect groundwater in the region, which is threatened by contamination from residential septic systems. The committee ultimately approved ten recommendations, which include establishing a sanitation authority, seeking an exception to state land use laws to allow for community sewers and ongoing monitoring.
