Shot-fired report sparks standoff east of Bend

A domestic dispute in which an 80-year-old man fired a shot brought Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and police to a home east of Bend Friday night, where a standoff ensued. They later learned the man had shot himself, and he eventually agreed to come out and was taken to the hospital, deputies said.

Deputies responded around 7:40 p.m. to a home in the 23000 block of Maverick Lane on a reported domestic dispute in which an elderly man fired a gunshot, said Lt. Chad Davis.

Deputies contacted the man’s 75-year-old wife, who had fled the home and went to a neighbor’s home. They established a perimeter with the help of Oregon State Police and Bend police, Davis said.

A crisis negotiator was able to make phone contact with the man, who agreed to come out, Davis said. He was treated by Bend fire medics and taken to St. Charles-Bend with life-threatening injuries, the lieutenant said, adding that his name is not being released due to his “mental crisis.”

An investigation determined the man had shot himself, Davis said. His wife was not hurt, nor was she a victim of domestic violence, he added.
