‘I Like Pie’ Run/Walk raises record amount
Footzone of Bend’s Annual Thanksgiving Day Fun Run/Walk “I Like Pie” was attended by a record number of participants, who brought pies and non- perishable food to downtown Bend on Thanksgiving Day 2013.
Over 1,700 people participated in this year’s run, which included a judged pie baking contest. Participants donated more than 7,400 pounds on food and Footzone of Bend raised over $12,900 in proceeds that were donated to NeighborImpact’s Food Bank.
Entrants were encouraged to bring 5 pounds of food and a pie to share with the masses as part of their entry fee for the run.
“It’s overwhelming to see so many people come out and support the community on Thanksgiving morning. We had some great volunteers and what a terrific way to start off a day that is centered around food, family and community,” says Sandy Klein, Food Resource Specialist for NeighborImpact’s Food Bank.
“The number of people accessing emergency food in Central Oregon is holding steady at 20,000 people each month, so food and fund drives of any size are an excellent way to ensure we can continue to provide help to those in need,” says Klein. The NeighborImpact Food Bank collected and distributed 2.6 million pounds of food (or 67 semi-trucks full of food loads) last year.
