Grieving friend of murdered Bend woman speaks

Pivoyne Castro-Luna wasn’t just loved by her family and friends, but those she worked for as well.

On Saturday, there was a memorial service held for the 42-year-old homicide victim. On Monday a friend and employer of almost a decade reflected on the person she was.

“I can’t imagine anyone ever wanting to hurt Pivo,” said Christy Hicks, Castro-Luna’s former employer. “I cannot fathom.”

Christy Hicks employed Pivo Castro-Luna as a maid for nine years. Over that time, she said they built a relationship that extended beyond boss and employee.

“She was just a beautiful, wonderful person that was more than just a person who cleaned our house — she was a part of our family,” Hicks said.

Hicks’ three kids also grew fond of Castro-Luna. When Hicks’ daughter was assigned to write letter on appreciation in her first grade class, she chose to write it about Castro-Luna.

“It was just thanking Pivo about being a wonderful part of our family, and the letter she wrote back was thanking us for allowing her to work for us for so long,” Hicks said.

She didn’t have much, but Castro-Luna was known for looking out for others, going so far as to provide her home to her church community.

“Pivo was constantly giving everything she had,” Hicks said. “They did not have any excess funds, and so now without her working it would be really important to see her children go to college.”

Hicks said the events are a tragedy for Castro-Luna’s husband, kids, friends and anyone who knew her.

“She’s at peace, but it will take a long time for the rest of us to be I think,” Hicks said.

We contacted the district attorney’s office to get an update on the investigation, but were unable to reach them for comment.
