Getting ready for U.S. Bank Pole Pedal Paddle

The day before the race, Bend was getting ready for the 2014 U.S. Bank Pole Pedal Paddle.

“Adrenaline is kind of pumping, getting everything together,” said Javier Ocariz, who is competing in the PPP. “Definitely getting very excited.”

From individuals, to businesses, to out-of-towners – The PPP craze is on and it’s all about the PPP packets, including the bib numbers.

About 2,900 packets were handed out. Each one of them, picked up by racer with their own personal reason to join the PPP.

“It was my birthday yesterday, and a couple of my friends from Oregon State did it last year,” said Andy Vosper, who came all the way from Portland to join the race.

“Just to have fun, and it doesn’t seem like it’s a super-competitive race, which is why I like it,” said Amy Tolliver who is racing in the PPP.

“There is no other race like it. It’s just very unique,” said Ocariz.

Next to the race itself, volunteers also look forward all year to the PPP.

“I’ve been doing it for 17 years,” said “Hollywood in his aloha shirt.

“It’s a way we can get together and laugh and have fun,” said Pat Popplewell, who was been volunteering for the PPP for 15 years.

She even has part of her family volunteering with her.

“My daughter and my two grand daughter and yesterday my great grandson was even here,” Popplewell said.

At the end of a busy day, there’s only one thing left to say.

“See you next year,” Hollywood said with a laugh.
