OSP trooper shoots dog after attack during arrest

An Oregon State Police trooper shot and injured a dog while making an arrest Saturday morning at the scene of a disturbance at a home near Grants Pass, troopers said.

The trooper was treated for a minor injury at a local hospital. The dog ran away and was found later that evening, taken to a veterinarian and was euthanized due its injury.

Around 8 a.m. Saturday, OSP dispatch was notified of a disturbance at a residence in the 5800 block of Fish Hatchery Road south of Grants Pass.

Residents reported an intoxicated female came to their home and was outside yelling and making threats toward them and their dogs. The suspect, Dawn Hemry-Boyle, 45, of Grants Pass, had a pit bull dog with her and also threatened to have her dog attack the resident’s dogs.

OSP Senior Trooper Josh Quick responded to the call with other troopers. While attempting to arrest Hemry-Boyle, he was attacked by the dog and shot it in self-defense, troopers said. The dog took off and an initial area search failed to find it.

Later that evening, someone found the dog and took it to a veterinarian where, with the owner’s permission, it was euthanized. Per standard protocol, rabies testing will be done on the dog.

Senior Trooper Quick drove himself to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, where he was treated for a lower-leg bite wound and released. He is not being placed on leave and is expected to return to work soon, troopers said.

Hemry-Boyle was booked into the Josephine County Jail on charges of harassment, menacing, second-degree criminal trespass and recklessly endangering another person.
