Terrebonne man battling cancer wins special trip
Lance Bechtel of Terrebonne was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2010. None of his treatments have been successful. Despite his condition, Bechtel is staying positive — and now, he has a big trip to take and a big game to catch.
We reached out to Bechtel because he won tickets to a pretty hyped football game this weekend — one of his “bucket list” items.
“You hear the C-word and you break down. It’s the worst word — nobody wants to hear that word,” Bechtel said Wednesday.
“Hot flashes, night sweats, those have been getting worse,” Bechtel said.
His battle with the blood disease has been slowly taking life away from the 35-year-old, no matter how hard the doctors have tried to save him.
“Let’s do another treatment — the cancer is back again,” Bechtel said. “What do you do?”
Four years into the fight, the prognosis is not good, but Bechtel’s focus is on his family.
“It’s not just me going through it, it’s them too,” Bechtel said.
He’s taken his sons camping, fishing, traveling, and on a trip to Disneyland.
“Even though it’s hard, it takes a lot out of me. It still, makes me feel good that we can be out there and doing stuff like that,” Bechtel said.
This weekend, he will check one more thing off his bucket list.
“I’ve never been to a NFL game either, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Bechtel said.
Thanks to his wife entering him into a photo competition, he won two tickets to the Seahawks vs. 49ers game this weekend.
Bechtel was awarded the trip to Qwest Field through the 12th Man Homefield Showdown photo contest. He submitted a photo wearing his favorite Seahawks jersey and a nasal cannula connecting him to an oxygen tank.
He wasn’t the top vote-getter, but the sponsors at Coldwell Banker Bain – Seal “couldn’t resist sending him to the game, a dream come true for Bechtel. Read more about Bechtel and the contest here.
“Blessings keep pouring in. Aw, man!” Bechtel said.
Humbling and inspiring Bechtel, even in his darkest days.
“All you can do is keep fighting,” he said.
Another one of Bechtel’s favorites? Our own Matt McDonald. He remembers taking a selfie with him just a few months back!
Bechtel’s next goal is to make it to Hawaii on vacation with his family.
