Culver middle schooler brings gun to school, arrested

A Culver Middle School student was arrested Tuesday after bringing an unloaded revolver to school for the past two days, authorities said.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins said deputies were called to the school shortly after 8 a.m., after the principal and school office staff learned from another student that a boy had brought a .22-caliber revolver in a holster, which was found in his front pocket.

The boy apparently said he’d found it at the campground where his family is staying, Adkins said.

“There were no threats to students or anybody,” the sheriff said.

Nevertheless, the boy was arrested and taken to the county juvenile department, charged with possession of a firearm ina public building (school grounds) and minor in possession of a firearm.”

In a letter sent home to middle school parents, Principal Brad Kudlac said, “At no time was the weapon brought out at school or used to threaten other students.”

He said federal school privacy laws limit what information can be shared with the public.

However, Kudlac urged parents to “use this incident as an opportunity to discuss your child’s role in keeping their school safe by reporting suspicious activity and the danger of bringing weapons, of any kind, to school.”

“The safety of our students and staff is paramount,” he wrote. “The student who reported this activity absolutely did the right thing.”

Adkins said the owner of the gun was found and contacted. Also, he said, deputies investigating the incident found no indication that the student was bullying or being bullied by others.
