Redmond teen driver crashes into canal, cited

KTVZ

No one was injured, but a juvenile female driver got a ticket Wednesday night after her car crashed into an irrigation canal, forcing the occupants to escape by crawling out of the sunroof, police said.

Redmond police and fire crews responded around 9 p.m. to the reported crash into the Central Oregon Irrigation District canal near Northwest Canal Boulevard and King Way, officers said.

While officers were on their way, they learned the two occupants, both juvenile females, had been able to get out through the sunroof. Officers and medics on scene confirmed there were no injuries.

COID crews responded and put out absorbent booms to contain any possible leak of oil or gas, officers said.

The canal’s flow was reduced, allowing the car to be removed from the canal and towed from the scene.

The unidentified juvenile female driver was issued a citation for careless driving. Officers said speed was believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, but not alcohol or drugs.
