National Hamburger Day celebrated in downtown Bend

KTVZ

Thursday was National Hamburger Day and Deschutes Brewery celebrated with a menu to salute the American sandwich.

Head chef Brian Kerr’s choices included three gourmet burgers, cheeseburger soup, and a “hamburger” dessert which consisted of a macaroon, fudge piece, white chocolate, jelly and coconut flakes.

Deschutes Brewery has been using Borlen Beef Company for 10 years. Borlen Beef picks up 80,000 pounds of spent grain per week from the brewery. Deschutes Brewery goes through 500 pounds of beef a week on average.

“They’re spent-grain fed, they’re pasture-fed and it keeps them leaner,” Borlen Beef owner Matt Borlen said. “They do have the fat in there that the restaurants like and the burgers are nice and juicy, and they have a home-grown flavor.”
