Serial bank robber admits to 2010 Redmond holdup
A 45-year-old convicted bank robber pleaded guilty in a Medford federal courtroom Monday to seven more bank holdups around the Northwest, including the 2010 robbery of the downtown Redmond branch of Bank of America.
Bradley William Monical pleaded guilty to robbery and weapons charges in three Oregon armed bank robberies in Redmond, Medford and Klamath Falls, as well as three holdups in Washington and another in Idaho.
Monical already is serving a 34-year prison sentence for two bank robberies, in Ashland and Coos Bay, in 2010 and 2011, as well as for his November 2012 escape from the Jackson County Jail while awaiting trial, authorities said.
He leaped from the jail’s rooftop exercise yard to a nearby tree to flee the jail – trees were later cut down as a result, the Medford Mail Tribune reported. Federal marshals recaptured him in Oregon City nearly a year later, with a girlfriend, Carolyn Gibson, who admitted providing money and a car for Monical after his escape. She was sentenced to probation in February.
Monical is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 23 before U.S. District Judge Michael McShane. He faces a 32-year prison sentence in connection with the new crimes, and federal prosecutors said the two terms would be served concurrently.
Monical used a variety of disguises when he robbed banks, including a ski mask, a bike helmet, a bandana and sunglasses. The amounts he got varied, including about $1,332 in Redmond and $16,091 in Medford, including an indictment.
