Low water challenging Prineville Reservoir boat launches

KTVZ

Launching a larger boat at Prineville Reservoir is proving difficult if not impossible due to low water levels – at levels typically seen in late summer or early fall, authorities said Monday.

“Currently the Prineville Reservoir is experiencing low water levels similar to what we would normally see around mid to late September,” Crook County sheriff’s Marine. Deputy Rick Stoltenberg.

“Due to the extremely low levels, launching boats at Powder House Cove and Jasper Point is difficult if not impossible for large boats,” Stoltenberg said, adding that “extreme caution should be used if attempting to launch at these locations.”

He also noted that next Sunday, the reservoir will host CAST for Kids, an annual event sponsored by the federal Bureau of Reclamation. The main parking areas will be closed to the public from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
