Bend assault suspect runs, caught with Taser, K-9’s bite
A 29-year-old man accused of assaulting his roommate at a northeast Bend duplex ran away and hid Wednesday night, prompting a search of the neighborhood and a confrontation with officers that triggered both deployment of a Taser and a bite from police dog Haras, officers said.
The suspect, identified as Justin Lee Corley, had run away when officers were called to a dispute in the 20800 block of Northeast Nova Loop, said Lt. Clint Burleigh.
Others involved in the dispute at the residence initially were uncooperative with officers, Burleigh added, but police determined Corley was the suspect in the assault on his 62-year-old roommate. Officers also determined Corley was in violation of terms of his probation.
Officer James Kinsella and his K-9 partner arrived and began helping canvass the neighborhood for Corley. They were still checking the area around 9:40 p.m. when Haras found Corley hiding in a row of bushes at another residence at the corner of Nova Loop and Eastview Drive, Burleigh said.
Corley again ran, and based on the circumstances at the time, Haras was not deployed to stop the fleeing suspect.
Burleigh said Corley ran back toward his duplex, then jumped into the bed of a pickup parked on the street and refused to comply with Kinsella’s demands.
Kinsella called for back-up and several officers responded to assist, but he still refused to cooperate, the lieutenant said.
As one officer approached, Corley became aggressive and attempted to assault the officer, who deployed his Taser at close range while Kinsella deployed Haras. The K-9 team successfully apprehended Corley as he tried to assault another officer, Burleigh said.
Corley was taken by Bend Fire Department medics to St. Charles Bend for treatment and later to Deschutes County Jail. Officers were not injured in the incident, Burley added.
Corley remained held Thursday at the jail, held without bail for probation violation and facing charges including fourth-degree assault, attempted assault on a public safety officer, resisting arrest, second-degree criminal trespass and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.
