Crook Co. FD: Extension-cord overload sparked fire

An electrical overload sparked a fire Sunday night that destroyed two outbuildings and caused other damage at a property off Grizzly Mountain Road north of Prineville, authorities said Monday.

Crook County Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched at 8:40 p.m. to the report of a structure fire near Northwest Grizzly Road, south of the Crook-Jefferson County line, officials said.

Arriving crews found outbuildings on fire and the flames threatening a residence and motorhome, said Fire Chief Matt Smith.

Deputy Chief Casey Kump said the fire also caused heat-exposure damage to a mobile home, a motorhome and a service truck, destroying outbuildings of 10-by-20 feet and 8-by-10 feet that stored firewood and personal items. Losses were estimated at $10,000.

The tenant on the property was home when the fire began and was using a garden hose to keep the mobile home from catching fire. Kump said it had two broken windows, while the motorhome and service truck had paint damage.

Crook County sheriff’s deputies also responded to the call. Kump said the tenant’s family was not displaced by the fire, which was caused by an overload of extension cords supplying power to a motorhome and nearby camp trailer.
