Newberry National Volcanic Monument celebrates winter Feb. 20
The Deschutes National Forest in partnership with Discover Your Forest, La Pine Chamber of Commerce, La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers, Oregon State Snowmobile Association, Sunriver Resort and Paulina Lake Lodge will host a Winter Celebration at Newberry National Volcanic Monument in recognition of the Monument’s 25 th Anniversary year of celebration.
The Winter Celebration will be held on Saturday, February 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 10-mile Sno Park in Newberry Caldera. Beginning at 10 a.m. a free shuttle will take visitors to the Sno Park every hour on the hour leaving from the Park and Ride area at the junction of Highway 97 and Paulina Lake Road. There is limited parking at the event location at 10-mile Sno Park.
Activities for the day include Jr. Ranger and Snow Wall opportunities for kids, Forest Service Winter Rangers cross-country ski interpretive tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (skis not provided), interpretive snowshoe hikes with Forest Service Winter Rangers at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (limited quantity of snow shoes provided), a photography exhibit at the Sno Park warming hut, a winter/avalanche safety display, a winter trails groomer spotlight, snow cat rides to Paulina Lake Lodge for lunch or dinner ($25.00 per person with 12 and under FREE, must call the Lodge at 541-536-2240 for reservations).
Snowmobile rentals are also available from Paulina Lake Lodge and the snow cat ride is included in the rental price.) Throughout the day, warm drinks will be available around a winter fire pit at the Sno Park.
The Winter Celebration will allow visitors to get a glimpse of what the Newberry Caldera area has to offer during winter.
