Redmond ice skating rink closes for season
Everyone is enjoying the mild temperatures over the past few weeks, but it’s not a good trend for an outdoor ice rink. The Redmond Area Parks and Recreation District and the city of Redmond announced Monday they have closed the downtown ice rink for the season.
The continued warm weather has made it difficult to maintain ice, and visitation rates have decreased, the city said in Monday’s announcement.
“The ice rink was festive and active over the holiday season, which is one of the main goals of the facility,” said Annie McVay, the city Parks Division manager, “So while it’s a little disappointing to close early, we’ve seen residents enjoying the temperatures with an increase in activities in the parks.”
The city of Redmond and RAPRD partner to operate and maintain the portable ice skating rink and provide an economical and fun activity for families to enjoy during the winter season.
The agencies strive to open the rink every year the Friday before Thanksgiving and close in early March, but that is weather-dependent.
