Umatilla Reservation shooting victim identified
The FBI has arrested a 23-year-old California man in a weekend shooting on northeast Oregon’s Umatilla Indian Reservation that left a Pendleton man dead and another man seriously injured, the agency said.
Umatilla tribal police received a report around 5:30 a.m. Saturday that there had been a shooting on the reservation, said FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele.
They responded and found a 27-year-old man had been shot, Steele said. He was taken to an area hospital, but died of his injuries.
Steele said the victim was not a tribal member, and identified him Monday, after family notification, as Anthony Jimenez, 27, of Pendleton.
A second man, who is a Umatilla tribal member, also was shot and was taken to the hospital, where the FBI said he was listed in serious condition Sunday. His name has not been released.
Shortly after Saturday’s shooting, Umatilla Tribal Police detained Victor Contreras, 23, of California, Steele said. After an investigation by tribal police and the FBI, agents made a “probable cause” arrest of Contreras and lodged him in the Umatilla County Jail.
Steele said Contreras, also a non-tribal member, was being taken to Portland on Monday for an initial appearance before a federal magistrate.
The investigation is continuing, she added.
