Update: NewsChannel 21 viewers come through: Mason gets his bike

KTVZ

It took less than 24 hours for NewsChannel 21 and KTVZ.COM viewers to fulfill a 4-year-old Bend boy’s (and his mom’s) wishes and raise enough funds for him to be getting a specialized bike for his use.

A few months back, we told you about the Great Bike Giveaway. This program provides bikes to disabled children who otherwise might not be able to afford one.

Four of the seven children who applied for the Great Bike Giveaway in Oregon have received bikes. But the Jordan family of Bend requested your help in the story we aired Monday.

“I was told to decide to leave him on life support or to take him off,” Tashina Jordan said Monday.

When her 4-year-old son, Mason, was only 5 weeks old, he had heart failure and two massive brain bleeds. After he went into a coma, they put him on life support.

“I told the doctors to keep going, and shortly after that Mason came out of his coma and was able to have his heart surgery,” Jordan said. ” I was told that he was never going to walk or do anything, and here we are now.”

Mason has a gait trainer and is now learning to take steps. He has begun to live his life much as any other 4-year-old would.

But there is one thing that would provide Mason the childhood experience to lift his spirits.

“A bike would be amazing for Mason to have, because he really enjoys being outside,” Jordan said.

Mason already has had the opportunity to ride one of these special bikes at physical therapy, and he shows great interest in it.

“When we go for walks downtown or in the Old Mill District or in the park, he loves watching bikes go by,” Jordan said. “And I would love for him to have a bike and be able to join the other kids and feel the wind in his face.”

To help the Jordan family, we said you can visit https://bikes.friendshipcircle.org/masonj .

And Tuesday morning, it was all set.

“Your amazing news team has helped raise enough money in under 24 hours to get Mason a bike!” Tashina wrote. “Thank you for doing this for us! There are not enough words to thank you all! I cried tears of joy when I saw the amount raised this morning! I have been in contact with Friendship Circle and we should be getting the bike as soon as they get measurements of Mason and everything else taken care of!”
