Bend motorcyclist still critical, week after Century Dr. crash
A 48-year-old Bend man remained in critical condition Monday at St. Charles Bend from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on Century Drive on April 16.
Deschutes County 911 received a report at 7:42 p.m. Saturday, April 16 of a motorcycle crash just west of the Seventh Mountain Resort, said sheriff’s Sgt. Vance Lawrence.
Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement were the initial responders with Bend Fire Department.
Lawrence said first responders determined that Shawn Holm, who was riding a 1988 red and white Honda Hurricane sport bike, was heading east when he left the roadway and crashed on the shoulder of the road.
There were no witnesses to the crash, Lawrence said in a news release, but a witness reported seeing the motorcyclist heading toward Bend from Mt. Bachelor “at a very high rate of speed.”
Holm, who had been wearing a helmet, was found unconscious but breathing, Lawrence said. Bend Fire medics stabilized him and called for an air ambulance. A Life Flight helicopter landed on the road and took him to the Bend hospital, where a house supervisor said he remained in critical condition Monday evening.
“Alcohol and excessive speed were factors in the crash,” the sergeant said, adding that it is still under investigation.
