Hazard trees close Princess Creek campground at Odell Lake
The Deschutes National Forest said Tuesday it has closed Princess Creek campground and boat launch on Odell Lake indefinitely due to a dangerous hazard tree situation.
The campground, which has a variety of tree species, had a wind event in the spring that caused some of the spruce, mountain hemlock, white fir and Douglas fir to blow down or become “root sprung”–exposing the roots and making the tree unstable.
Additionally, trees in the campground are also showing signs of root rot, making them more susceptible to wind events and unpredictable for camper safety.
The Forest Service will keep the campground and boat launch closed until foresters are able to ensure that the site is safe for recreationists.
Individuals who want to visit Odell Lake can still reserve nearby Sunset Cove campground, which is much larger and can accommodate RVs. Visitors can reserve sites at Sunset Cove beginning this summer through www.hoodoorecreation.com.
Day use visitors who are interested in boating are encouraged to also use Sunset Cove, which has a larger boat launch and fish-cleaning station.
